The Cell Goes Up the Mountain

Mt. Hopkins: August 4, 1998

The MMT cell's move up the mountain was so smooth that we decided to take it all the way to the summit in one day, rather than spreading the trip over two. We left the FLWO Basecamp at around 10:00 AM and arrived at at the Summit at1:20 PM. The move was as smooth as could be.

The large tractor was driven by Lynn Harris of Sierrita Mining and Ranching. Lynn's son, Norman, drove the large Caterpillar Loader that pushed the load on the steeper sections. J.T. Williams coordinated the move. Bill Omann rode on the trailer with the load, eating dust, running the transverse counterweight and reading the inclinometer. Gabe Guerrero and Phill Benjamin drove the lead truck, clearing small rocks out of the road ahead of the load. Russ Stenman and Michael Alegria followed behind along with Craig Foltz, who took these pictures.

A rainstorm the previous night had shredded the tarps that were covering the cell and washed the road out in several places. The FLWO Support crew patched the road while the cell was readied to leave the Basecamp.
