The Cell Goes into the Building
Mt. Hopkins Summit: August 6, 1998
The installation of the mirror cell into the building started at about 7:00 AM --
the early start was a hedge against afternoon thunderstorms. The day was clear,
cool and beautiful with not a trace of wind, an important factor for the
operators of the 175 ton crane. The day started with the inverse of Monday's
operations: two lifts were required to tilt the cell back to zenith pointing
prior to the final lift into the building. These were carried out by about 9:30 AM.
The images here show the rest of the process.
Crane services were handled by Marco Crane and Rigging. Truck driving was
by Sierrita Mining and Ranching. J.T. Williams coordinated an all-star crew
in another seamless operation.
