The Mirror Goes Up the Mountain

Mt. Hopkins: March 23, 1999

Having been loaded the previous day, the primary mirror was ready for the trip up the mountain. The day began at 7:00 AM as the crew assembled. The first step was a test run down the road to the KZAZ turn-off. A few panels were removed from the bottom of the box so that the mirror's smooth ride could be verified. The rig was then brought up to the Basecamp turn-off where the panels were installed and taped.

The trip to the mountain started at about 9:00 AM. The trip was documented by a crew preparing a NOVA segment and by Channel 13. The latter brought their helicopter for aerial videography. The convoy arrived at the summit at about noon. As in the moves of the other large pieces, a giant loader traveled behind the transport rig and pushed it up the steeper parts of the road.

The whole trip went without a hitch. After arrival at the summit, the mirror box was offloaded and the truck retreated.

The crane and its crew were from Marco Crane & Rigging. Sierrita Mining and Ranching handled the trucking, and the entire operation was directed by J.T. Williams.
