MMT Identifies Third-Highest Redshift Quasar

In June 2003, Steward Observatory astronomer Xiaohui Fan discovered a quasar at a redshift of 6.21 using the MMT and Red Channel spectrograph. Receding from the Earth at more than 96% the speed of light, the quasar's redshift is exceeded only by two others identified by Fan, at redshifts of 6.28 and 6.40.
